Atlantic Avenue Elevated subway line begins operating.
August 22, 1901
Built and operated by the Boston Elevated Railway Company, the line runs from North Station along today’s Commercial Street and Atlantic Avenue, then along Beach Street [Pleasant Street-Beaucher], then down Harrison Avenue to Castle Square, forming a loop when it reconnects with the Main Line. The line is discontinued on October 1, 1938,* and the tracks are torn down in 1942.
